Palmer Data Recovery

Data recovery is a service provided to allow a customer to access data that they are no longer able to access for a multitude of potential reasons. The two main categories of data loss are ‘logical’ and ‘physical’.

A client may be unable to access data for ‘logical’ reasons where the storage medium is functioning correctly, but the structures of the data are unrecognisable by the relevant computer system. The data is still there, but the computer is unable to access it.

Through the use of partly automated software tools, the data structure can be repaired and the data copied out to a secondary storage medium, ready for access by any computer.

E.g. the data on a hard disk drive (HDD) is corrupted by user error or software malfunction. The user had important data that they could see, but are no longer able to do so. The DR engineer rebuilds the ‘index’ system required by a computer to be able to reconstitute the data bits into an intelligible document or file.

A client may be unable to access data as a result of a ‘physical’ reason, where the media that holds the data is no longer functioning. These scenarios range from media that have been damaged by fire/flood/damage, (external factors), through to damage that results from media failure itself, such as electronics ‘burn-outs’ and ‘head crashes’, (internal factors).

Through the use of spare parts and a class 100, clean environment, the damaged media can be placed into a state where the data can be copied out to a secondary media and made ready to be read by another computer system.

E.g. A laptop is dropped and the HDD inside is damaged by the shock, so that the heads that read the data from the HDD platters will no longer function. The DR engineer opens the HDD in a Class 100 clean environment and replaces the damaged parts to allow the HDD to read the data once more.
